In the case of Overwatch 2, verification was removed for all users who used the old Overwatch accounts, and this is a free-to-play game, while for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, protection must be complete and not allow exceptions. Overwatch 2’s mobile device verification system was already causing headaches for some players before the game’s launch, but the problem worsened during launch when it became clear that Blizzard was not accepting prepaid or shared phone numbers. Despite the game’s free-to-play status, this virtually excluded young players or those who couldn’t afford a long-term monthly contract. And there were a lot of such people in America alone, not to mention other countries.īlizzard later informed players of some of the larger issues that players have been experiencing over the past few days, including the controversial SMS Protect feature. While the feature was intended to combat negative behavior by holding toxic players accountable, Blizzard now says it has “made the decision to remove the phone number requirement.”
Activision Blizzard’s upcoming shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appears to have the same mobile phone requirements as Overwatch 2.
